  adamah - I think you give the elders too much credit. He had told them previously that the marriage hadn't been consumated but they wouldn't do anything to help so it seems a bit rich to suggest that they didn't believe him after he left her. Fraz

  Nice tongue in cheek reference to the fact that he believed Armageddon was coming before he turned 18 and at 70 still believes it is coming soon - poor chap - but at least his delusions allowed him to travel the world to delude others. I wonder whether he will have a death bed realization that his dream of seeing the big A before he died so he could live forever would not be realized? I also liked the reference to them as Christians - someone should have enlightened the journo that they do not worship Christ - they worship the WBTS GB.

  Designs - What do you mean by: 'Some religions, like the SDA, have actual Pre-Marital counseling for couples and tragedies like this would never happen or be minimized.'? The only tragedy here is that normal intimacy between consenting adults who love each other has brought on pangs of guilt because of an evil organisation that feels the need to control every aspect of its members' lives.

  trying to convince my wife not to confess...

  waffles - don't try and use the WBTS rules and regs - my reading of the passage you quoted is that it is all about intent - if it was vaguely sexual then they will get you. As others have pointed out the elders will have a lot of discretion and also as others have pointed out play the headship card and persuade her it is nto necesary now to confess as it you are happily marriedd and to confess could distrub that. The thing that gets me as smeone who has never been part of this authoritarian organisation masquerading as a religion is that IT IS NONE OF ANYONE ELSE'S BUSINESS WHAT YOU AND YOUR WIFE DID WHEN YOU WERE COURTING!!!! The fact that she feels soem obligation to confess is so messed up. Fraz

  I would have thought that he would be entitled to an annulment on the basis the marriage was never consumated (so that it is as if he was never married at all) but are you surprised that the elders have taken a rigid rule based approach to this such that a loyal Witness is treated unfairly and bullied through shunning? What do the Witnesses get for all the obedience and loyalty they show to the WBTS? Not much...

  Aunt Fancy - thank goodness your grandson told your husband not to read to him from the My Book of Bible Stories - it is a horrible piece of fear-mongering indoctrination. I have banned my wife from reading it to my son.

  On the issue of letting your mother see your kids, I agree with coffee's comment early in the thread - allow the visit in your presence only - this has the advantage taht your mother can't try to sneak in some indoctrination without you knowing and forces your mother to be in your presence. By showing your mother what tolerance means, maybe she will relax her position over time.

  Elder and i discussed beards, and got into rules and regulations

  during a study the elder brought out that eating blood and omens are from the devil, and brought me to leviticus 19:26 (i think).. in verse 27 i says this:.

  you must not shave the hair on the side of your head or disfigure the edges of your beard.. i said: "so why are we not allowed to have beards?".

  Additional rules and regs as the reason for not allowing beards? Really????? They coudl ahve come up with something better than that surely? It does paint of a picture of a bunch of total control freaks - oh wait - that's exactly what the WBTS GB is. I am keeping my beard for exactly that reason over my Witness wife's strenuous objections - I am not going to be dictated to by the WBTS GB through my wife. Maybe if she da's I will shave it off.
